Franciacorta is the small Lombard wine region between Brescia and Lake Iseo that produces Italy's most serious traditional-method sparkling wine. The region is 75 km east of Milan, 90 minutes by chauffeur.
The estates worth visiting **Ca' del Bosco** — the largest and most architecturally remarkable winery. Maurizio Cattelan sculptures in the cellars. By appointment only, English tours daily. **Bellavista** — owned by the Moretti family, smaller, more polished. Tour includes the historic family villa. **Berlucchi** — the estate that invented Franciacorta in 1961, the most historic visit, lunch on the terrace possible. **Bersi Serlini** — smaller, family-run, more intimate visit format. Best for a serious tasting without crowds.
How to plan the day **Morning** (10:30–13:00) — one cellar tour with tasting. Ca' del Bosco or Bellavista for first-time visitors. **Lunch** — Due Colombe in Borgonato (one Michelin star, modern Italian) or Trattoria Visconti in Ome (rustic, lakeside, simple). **Afternoon** (15:00–17:00) — second cellar, lighter, more conversational tasting. **Optional add-on** — 30-minute drive to Lake Iseo's western shore for an aperitivo at the Pyramides di Zone or in the village of Sulzano.
Best months April–June and September–October. August is hot and the estates run reduced summer hours. The harvest week (late August) is the most dramatic to witness.
Combine with A morning at Ca' del Bosco and afternoon at [Serravalle Designer Outlet](/atlas/serravalle-designer-outlet-guide) is theoretically possible (90 min between them) but ambitious. Better: Franciacorta as a single-focus day from Milan, or as a 2-day Lake Iseo + Franciacorta loop.

Frequently asked
Do Franciacorta wineries require advance booking?+
Yes — the major estates (Ca' del Bosco, Bellavista, Berlucchi) require booking 2–4 weeks ahead, longer in October. Smaller estates accept 48-hour notice.
How does Franciacorta compare to Champagne?+
Same method (second fermentation in bottle), different climate. Franciacorta is rounder, less acidic, more fruit-forward. Often blind-tested as equivalent to mid-tier Champagne at half the price.
Can I ship Franciacorta home from the estate?+
Yes — all major estates ship to EU, US, UK, Canada and Asia. EU shipping is duty-prepaid; international takes 7–14 days and customs duties depend on destination.
