Venice is 270 km east of Milan. The fastest route is the Frecciarossa high-speed train, not the car. Here is how to make a Milan-Venice day actually work.
The transport options **Frecciarossa Executive** — 2h 15min city centre to city centre. €230–€340 one-way per seat, private compartment available. The clear winner. **Private chauffeur** — 3h 30min by motorway. Useful only for door-to-door with multiple stops. **Helicopter** — 70 min from Linate to Venice Lido. €4,800–€6,500 one-way. Faster only if combined with arrival straight at a Lido hotel. **Private jet to Venice Marco Polo** — overkill for a day trip.
What to do in 7 hours Arrive Venice Santa Lucia 11:00 → private water taxi to the hotel (Cipriani, Aman, Gritti Palace) for bag drop → walking tour of San Marco area → lunch at Harry's Bar or Antiche Carampane → afternoon at the Doge's Palace or Peggy Guggenheim Collection → aperitivo at Caffè Florian → 18:30 return.
When this works Off-season (November–February) and shoulder months (April, October). Peak July–August Venice is unmanageable as a day trip — better as a 2-night stay.
Combine with A Milan stay with one Venice day inserted. The reverse — Venice stay with a Milan day — works equally well; the Frecciarossa runs hourly.

Executive class is 10 seats per carriage, almost always quiet. Standard high season can be full but Frecciarossa books in advance.

Is Cipriani the best Venice hotel?+
For first-time visitors, yes. Aman Venice (Palazzo Papadopoli) and Gritti Palace are the alternatives — Aman for discretion, Gritti for Grand Canal address.
