Como to St. Moritz as a single day excursion

Lake Como breakfast, Bernina pass for the photography, Engadin lunch, return at sunset — what a 12-hour cross-border day actually looks like.

4 min read

A St. Moritz day from Lake Como is one of the most rewarding single-day excursions in northern Italy. Plan 12 hours door-to-door. With our Mercedes V-Class chauffeur it removes the need to drive the mountain passes yourself.

The schedule **08:00** — pickup at Lake Como hotel. **08:00–11:00** — drive via Menaggio, Chiavenna, Maloja Pass. Coffee stop at Chiavenna's Caurga gorge or in Maloja village. **11:00** — arrive St. Moritz, walk the village, visit the Segantini Museum (Alpine art) or the Engadin Museum. **13:00** — lunch. Options: La Marmite at Corviglia Mountain Restaurant (lift up from St. Moritz), Hotel Waldhaus Sils (the writer's grand hotel, 15 minutes south), or Chesa Veglia in the village. **15:00–17:00** — drive the Bernina Pass south of St. Moritz to Poschiavo (1.5 hours round-trip). The Bernina Express train route, by car — the most photographed alpine drive in Europe. **18:00** — depart St. Moritz. **21:00** — back to Lake Como.

Alternative: combine with the Bernina train For non-drivers, take the Bernina Express train from Tirano (1h from Lake Como) to St. Moritz — 2.5 hours of UNESCO-listed scenic rail. Our chauffeur meets you at both ends.

When this day works June to October. November to May the lunch options thin out and the Bernina south road can have snow. Winter (December–March) is also dramatic but is a different trip — focus on the village, the spa hotels and ski.

Pair with [A Franciacorta day](/atlas/franciacorta-wine-day) on the day after — both are weather-dependent so building in a flexible itinerary helps.

Frequently asked

Is it worth crossing into Switzerland just for a day?+
Yes — St. Moritz is the most concentrated alpine luxury in Europe. The Engadin valley, even seen briefly, is one of the great European landscapes.
Do I need Swiss francs?+
Most St. Moritz restaurants and shops accept euros, with a 5–10% exchange penalty. Cards are universal and the easiest option.
Is St. Moritz worth a 2-night stay rather than a day trip?+
For first-time visitors, yes. The town comes alive in the evenings (Badrutt's Palace Bar, Chesa Veglia) and the morning light is different from afternoon. Day trips are a good preview, not a substitute.
