Milan to St. Moritz: the route, the border, the car you actually need

190 km, two countries, three mountain passes — and the Mercedes drive that beats both the train and the helicopter on most days.

5 min read

St. Moritz is 190 km from Milan and one Swiss border. The drive is dramatic — Lake Como's western shore, Chiavenna, Maloja Pass, the Engadin valley. On a clear day it is one of Europe's great chauffeured routes.

Driving time **Milan to St. Moritz**: 3h 15 min in summer, 3h 45 min in winter (with the chained-tire alpine stretch). Add 30 minutes for border crossing on Friday afternoons.

Route Milan → A9 motorway → Como → SS340 western shore Lake Como → Menaggio → SS36 over the Splügen exit → Chiavenna → SS37 over Maloja Pass (1,815 m) → Sils Maria → St. Moritz. The Maloja section, on the Italian-Swiss border, is the most photographed.

Vehicles for this trip **Mercedes V-Class** — our default for parties of 4+. Heated seats, AWD on winter spec, ski rack on request. **Mercedes S-Class** — couples wanting more polish, summer only (we use V-Class with winter tires in cold months). **Mercedes G-Class** — when guests want the alpine feel, with full ski equipment loadout.

Border crossing Chiavenna / Castasegna is the crossing. Swiss customs may inspect luggage; allow 10–20 minutes. Carry passports (not just ID cards) for non-EU passengers. Swiss vehicle vignette (€42) is included in our pricing.

When the helicopter beats the car [Helicopter from Lake Como to St. Moritz](/atlas/helicopter-transfer-lake-como) is 35 minutes versus 3 hours by car. It's worth it for the time saved if weather allows. The road, however, is more dramatic and is half the experience for first-time visitors.

Combine with A morning in [Bellagio](/atlas/bellagio-luxury-guide), lunch in Chiavenna (Crotto Quartino), arrival in St. Moritz for sunset.

How much is a Milan-St. Moritz transfer?+
From €1,200 one-way for Mercedes V-Class, all motorway tolls and Swiss vignette included. Helicopter equivalent from Lake Como: €4,500–€5,800.
