Milan to Cortina d'Ampezzo: the alpine transfer for the Dolomites

415 km of motorway and mountain road — when to drive, when to helicopter, where to lunch in Belluno.

4 min read

Cortina d'Ampezzo, host of the 2026 Winter Olympics, is 415 km east of Milan. The drive is 4h 30min in good conditions — longer than St. Moritz, but no border crossing.

Route Milan → A4 motorway east through Brescia and Verona → Padua → A27 north → Belluno → SS51 over the Boite valley → Cortina. The last 50 km, through Pieve di Cadore and the Boite, is the scenic stretch.

When to drive, when to fly **Car** — for groups of 4+, for ski equipment loadout, for the experience of the Dolomite approach. Mercedes V-Class with winter tires is standard. **Helicopter from Linate** — 55 minutes, weather permitting. €5,800–€7,200 one-way for an Agusta AW109. The view of the Brenta and Pale di San Martino groups en route is the trip itself. **Train + transfer** — Frecciarossa to Calalzo di Cadore (4 hours), then 40-minute private transfer to Cortina. Carbon-light option.

Where to stop **Belluno** (3h from Milan) — lunch at Al Borgo, a 14th-century cellar restaurant. The natural midway stop. **Pieve di Cadore** (3h 45min) — Titian's birthplace, brief museum visit.

The Olympic factor February 2026 brings major road closures and limited hotel availability. Book chauffeurs 4+ months ahead for the Olympic period. Helicopter slots from Linate and Venice (closer) are restricted.

Where to stay Rosapetra Spa Resort, Cristallo (a Luxury Collection Hotel), Grand Hotel Savoia, Ambra Cortina. Our concierge has working relationships with all four for last-minute access.

Frequently asked

Is Venice closer to Cortina than Milan?+
Yes — Venice is 160 km, 2h 30min by car. For a Cortina-only trip, flying into Venice (VCE) is more efficient than Milan.
Can the helicopter land in Cortina itself?+
Yes — the Fiames heliport, 4 km from town, accommodates private helicopter landings. Several hotels also have approved private pads.
What's the best month to visit Cortina off-season?+
Late June and early September — hiking, alpine flora, no ski crowds, all restaurants open. October has the best light for photography.
