Renting a fully staffed Italian villa is closer to staying as a guest in a private home than checking into a hotel. The rules are different.
Tipping Pool of staff is the most common arrangement — gratuity covers the whole team. €100–€150 per day per guest is the standard for fully-staffed villas (chef + housekeeper + butler/concierge). Pay on departure, in cash, to the head housekeeper or villa manager. Avoid splitting per role.
Shoes Italian villas with marble floors expect shoes off in living areas. Slippers are usually provided. Outdoor terrace areas are shoes-on.
Pool and grounds The villa staff maintain the pool — guests do not lounge with food and drink at the pool edge unless specifically invited to. Wet bathing suits indoors are universally disliked.
Staff hours A staffed villa typically has staff on-site 8:00–22:00. Late dinners require advance notice. Overnight presence (security guard, on-call butler) is by arrangement — not assumed.
Damages Italian villas are valued at €15M–€60M+ for the top tier. The rental contract specifies the insurance deposit (€10,000–€50,000). Stains on antique linens, marks on parquet and any damage to art are itemized at departure. Use coasters and the staff will love you.
Inviting external guests Most rentals allow day visits by additional guests with notice. Overnight stays beyond the contracted headcount require approval and a per-person uplift.
What to ask before arrival - Is the chef included or charged separately? - Are wines from the cellar included or charged? - Is internet up to remote-work standard? (Often weak — check before assuming.) - What's the policy on hosting an event (15+ guests)? - Is the boat included, charged hourly, or third-party?
Combine with Most villa rentals work with our concierge for ground transport, supplementary chef days, [private boat days](/atlas/private-boat-day-lake-como), and excursions. We are happy to coordinate alongside your villa manager rather than around them.

Frequently asked
How much should I tip a private chef in an Italian villa?+
If the chef is part of the villa staff pool, the daily villa tip covers them. If hired separately for one evening, €50–€100 per guest for the meal, paid directly.
Can I bring my own wine to a staffed villa?+
Yes — most villas welcome it. The cellar at the villa may be charged per bottle consumed; ask before opening.
Are pets allowed in Italian luxury villas?+
Case by case. Most welcome small dogs with notice and an extra cleaning fee. Cats are rarer. Always confirm before arrival.
