Lake Como has roughly seven hotels in the international luxury tier. Below them sits a stratum of excellent four-stars and villa rentals.
The grand classics **Grand Hotel Villa d'Este, Cernobbio** — the benchmark since 1873. Best for first-time visitors who want the full historic experience. The pool, the gardens, the Veranda restaurant.
Grand Hotel Tremezzo — the floating pool facing Bellagio. More contemporary feel inside than Villa d'Este, T Spa, four restaurants. Better for families and longer stays.
Mandarin Oriental Lago di Como, Blevio — opened 2019 as the rebuild of Castadiva. The most contemporary luxury on the lake, with private villas on a 10-hectare estate.
The new aristocrats **Passalacqua, Moltrasio** — opened 2022, an 18th-century villa restored as a 24-room hotel. Named #1 hotel in the world by The World's 50 Best in 2023. Books out 6 months ahead.
Il Sereno, Torno — Patricia Urquiola design, infinity pool, eastern shore so morning light. The most architecturally interesting on the lake.
The historic anchors **Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni, Bellagio** — the only true grand hotel directly in Bellagio. Star Mistral restaurant on site.
Villa Lario, Pognana Lario — exclusive-use only. The entire estate goes to one family at a time.
Below the luxury tier but worth knowing Vista Lago di Como (Como town), Hotel Belvedere (Bellagio), Filario (Lezzeno). These are well-run four-stars at half the price.
Tell our concierge the dates, group size and whether you want the lake in front or above — we match the hotel to the trip, not the other way around.
