Lake Como is a year-round destination but only six of those months are obviously good. Here is what each month actually looks like.
April — early opening Most hotels open mid-April. Gardens start: rhododendrons in late April, azaleas first week of May. Cool mornings (8–12°C), warm afternoons (18–22°C). No crowds. Half of restaurants still on winter hours.
May — the connoisseur month The lake's best month for many regulars. Villa Carlotta gardens at peak, Villa Balbianello open, perfect light, manageable hotel rates (30% below July). Boat days possible with light layers.
June — high season opens Warm (20–28°C), all hotels and restaurants fully open. Weekday and weekend prices diverge sharply. First week is still quiet; last two weeks fill up.
July — peak crowd Hot (25–32°C), full hotels, full restaurants, full boats. Book everything 8–12 weeks ahead. Avoid SS583 (Como–Bellagio) at any time.
August — Italian August The first two weeks are foreign tourist peak. Aug 15–31 (Ferragosto and after) Italians take over: some local restaurants close, hotels remain full.
September — the locals' return Often the best month overall: warm water (still 23°C), warm air (22–28°C), reduced crowds, all venues open. Hotel rates drop the first Monday after Ferragosto.
October — gold season The most beautiful light of the year. Hotels reduce 20–30%. Boat days still possible until mid-month. Last weekend often sees Villa Balbianello close.
November–March — winter Most luxury hotels close November to mid-April. Bellagio and Cernobbio remain partially open. Sights closed (Balbianello, Carlotta). Worth visiting only as part of a Milano + St. Moritz combination, not as a Como-focused trip.
When to choose what **First-time visitors** → late May or first three weeks of September. **Photography** → October mornings. **Boat days** → June 15 to September 15. **Quiet luxury** → second half of May or second half of September.
