Straight answer: for two people with light luggage and no stops, the Frecciarossa is better — 2h 15 city centre to city centre. For families, heavy luggage, an early flight from Marco Polo, or any itinerary with a stop, the car wins.

Where the road ends Venice has no cars. The chauffeur can reach exactly two points: **Piazzale Roma** and the **Tronchetto** car park. From there you continue by private water taxi, which is the transfer people remember — 20 to 35 minutes to almost any hotel's water door, from about €120–€180 for the boat. The concierge books the water taxi to meet the car so there is no queue at the Piazzale Roma pontoon, which in season is the worst 25 minutes of an otherwise beautiful arrival.
Arriving at Marco Polo airport instead? The airport has its own water-taxi dock and the boat runs straight across the lagoon to the hotel — often better than any land route.
Stops that justify the drive Verona (1h 45 from Milan, see our [Arena guide](/atlas/verona-opera-transfer)), Lake Garda's southern shore, Vicenza's Palladian villas, or the Prosecco hills above Valdobbiadene. Any one of them turns a transfer into a day and costs less than booking it separately.
The one thing to fix in advance Tell us your Venice hotel's **water entrance**, not its street address. Most hotels have both and only one of them matters when you are arriving with luggage.
