Villa Carlotta sits in Tremezzo, on the western shore of Lake Como, directly facing Bellagio. It is the lake's only major villa that combines a serious art collection with one of Italy's great botanical gardens.

The collection The ground-floor rooms hold Antonio Canova's "Cupid and Psyche" (a workshop version of the Louvre original), several Hayez canvases including the celebrated "Last Kiss of Romeo and Juliet" copy, and a Thorvaldsen frieze. Two hours is enough to see the interior unhurried.

The gardens 70,000 square metres rising in terraces. The rhododendron and azalea explosion peaks in late April and early May. The bamboo grove and the citrus garden are open year-round. The upper terraces give the most photographed view of Bellagio across the water.

When to go Opening (9:30 am) is the only sensible slot in high season — the gardens are quiet, the light is east-facing onto Bellagio, and you can leave by noon for lunch. Late afternoon is the second-best option for the western light on the villa facade.

The villa interior is open March to November only. The gardens close late October. Outside this window, focus on Villa d'Este and Villa Monastero, which open year-round.
