Bellagio: the insider's guide to the pearl of Lake Como

Where to stay, where to dock, where to eat and the two hours of the day Bellagio actually belongs to you.

7 min read

Bellagio sits at the fork of Lake Como, where the lake splits into its Como and Lecco branches. From late morning to about 4 pm it belongs to day-trippers from cruise ships and ferries. Before 10 am and after 6 pm it belongs to whoever knows it.

Where to stay The two addresses that matter are the Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni — a Belle Époque palace right on the village quay — and, across the water in Tremezzo, the Grand Hotel Tremezzo, whose floating pool faces Bellagio directly. For a quieter, more residential stay, Villa Lario in Pognana Lario rents the entire estate to one family at a time.

How to actually arrive Forget the public ferry. Arrive by private boat from Como, Cernobbio or Tremezzo — twenty to thirty-five minutes depending on the dock. Our [private boat day on Lake Como](/atlas/private-boat-day-lake-como) lays out the full itinerary. By car, the SS583 from Como is narrow and slow; allow 75 minutes from Como town and avoid it on summer weekends.

Where to eat Salice Blu, just above the village, has the best terrace view at lunch. La Punta, at the literal tip of the peninsula, is where locals take an aperitivo at sunset. For dinner, Mistral at Villa Serbelloni holds a Michelin star.

What to actually do Walk up Salita Serbelloni and Salita Mella before breakfast. Visit Villa Melzi's botanical gardens at opening (9.30 am). Then leave — by boat — for [Villa del Balbianello](/atlas/villa-del-balbianello-visit) or a long lunch at [Villa d'Este](/atlas/villa-deste-cernobbio).

Frequently asked

How do I get to Bellagio from Milan?+
Allow roughly 90 minutes by private car to Como town, then 25 minutes by private boat. By road only, count on 2 to 2.5 hours depending on traffic. Helicopter from Linate lands in about 18 minutes — see our Lake Como helicopter guide.
When is Bellagio least crowded?+
Early June and the last week of September — warm enough to swim, no cruise-ship influx. In any season, before 10 am and after 6 pm the village is essentially empty.
Do I need to book restaurants in advance?+
Yes — the best terraces (Mistral, La Punta, Salice Blu) book out 3–4 weeks ahead between June and September. Our concierge holds priority tables.
