Villa d'Este Cernobbio: lunch, the pool, the bar — what to actually book

The legendary floating pool, Veranda lunch, and how non-guests are quietly accommodated.

5 min read

Villa d'Este, in Cernobbio, has been a hotel since 1873 and a Renaissance villa since 1568. It is the most celebrated address on Lake Como and remains one of the few European grand hotels where the original families still return year after year.

Day access for non-guests Villa d'Este is officially reserved for residents and members. In practice, the hotel accepts non-guest lunch reservations at Veranda (the main lakeside restaurant) and at the Sundeck Bar, subject to availability. Pool access is for hotel guests only and is non-negotiable.

What to book Veranda lunch is the easiest entry — three courses on the lakeside terrace, jacket preferred but not required at lunch. The Sundeck Bar from 6 pm is the village's most photographed aperitivo, served on a floating platform with the lake at your feet. For dinner, the more formal Veranda evening service requires jacket.

Combine with a Cernobbio day Walk Cernobbio's piazza before lunch. After Villa d'Este, board a private boat for a slow afternoon along the western shore — Moltrasio, Carate Urio, the Villa Erba grounds. Our [private boat day on Lake Como](/atlas/private-boat-day-lake-como) covers this exact route.

A quieter alternative If Villa d'Este is fully booked, Mandarin Oriental Lago di Como (formerly Castadiva), 20 minutes north in Blevio, offers the same level of polish with more contemporary interiors and a quieter shoreline.
