Brera at night: galleries, courtyards, and where Milan actually drinks

From Pinacoteca after-hours to Bar Brera and the courtyards only locals know.

5 min read

Brera is Milan's old artists' quarter — cobblestone streets, ivy-covered courtyards, the Pinacoteca, the Fine Arts Academy and the city's densest concentration of small galleries. After 19:00 it becomes the most pleasant district in Milan for a long, slow evening.

Start with art **Pinacoteca di Brera** — Mantegna's "Dead Christ", Raphael's "Marriage of the Virgin", Hayez's "The Kiss". Two hours is enough. Booking is recommended on weekends.

Palazzo Citterio — opened 2024 as the Pinacoteca's modern extension, holds the Jucker and Vitali collections. Usually empty.

Eat **Cova** (Via Monte Napoleone, edge of Brera) — historic patisserie, perfect for an early aperitivo with pasticcini. **Solferino** — long-standing Brera trattoria, simple Lombard cooking, locals. **Da Giacomo Arengario** — for a more serious dinner, Da Giacomo's terrace overlooks the Duomo from the Museo del Novecento.

Drink **Bar Brera** (Piazza San Marco) — outdoor terrace, the bartenders know the regulars. **N'Ombra de Vin** — wine bar in a deconsecrated chapel, deep list of natural wines. **The Botanical Club** — gin-focused, small, ten-stool bar.

Walk The walk from Brera into the Quadrilatero passes through the Naviglio Martesana courtyards and Via Borgonuovo's palazzi — most are private, but several have open ground-floor courtyards visible from the street.

Pair with A [Quadrilatero shopping](/atlas/quadrilatero-della-moda-guide) afternoon — Brera is the natural after-dinner extension. Or a [Galleria Vittorio Emanuele](/atlas/galleria-vittorio-emanuele-milan) lunch followed by an evening in Brera.
