Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II: the world's first shopping mall, used properly

Prada's first store, the bull mosaic, the seventh-floor terrace nobody finds, and where to actually have lunch.

5 min read

The Galleria, completed in 1877, connects Piazza del Duomo to Piazza della Scala. It is the world's oldest active shopping arcade and one of the few in Europe that has remained continuously luxury since opening day.

What lives inside Prada's original 1913 store sits at the Duomo end. Louis Vuitton, Versace and Gucci flank the cross. Borsalino, Mercedes-Benz Cafe, Cracco (Michelin restaurant of chef Carlo Cracco), and the historic Camparino bar at the Duomo entrance complete the floor.

The two secrets **The bull mosaic** — at the centre of the cross, a bull mosaic floor tile from the Turin coat of arms (the city of Italian unification). Local tradition says spinning your right heel on the bull's testicles brings luck. Yes, really.

The Highline rooftop walk — a paid 45-minute walking tour goes onto the Galleria's roof, between the glass dome and the surrounding palaces. Bookings at HighlineGalleria.com.

Above the Galleria The seventh-floor terrace of La Rinascente department store, on Via Santa Radegonda just behind the Galleria, opens directly onto the Duomo's spires. It is the closest you can sit to the cathedral facade. The terrace has a bar (Maio) for aperitivo and a restaurant (Caffè Letterario).

Combine with A morning at the [Quadrilatero](/atlas/quadrilatero-della-moda-guide) (Via Montenapoleone is 3 minutes on foot), lunch at Cracco inside the Galleria, then [rooftop aperitivo](/atlas/milano-rooftop-aperitivo) with the Duomo lit.

Frequently asked

Is the Galleria free to walk through?+
Yes, fully public 24/7. The rooftop tour is paid and bookable separately.
What's the best photo spot in the Galleria?+
Stand at the centre cross, look up at the glass dome. Early morning (8–9 am) has the cleanest light and the fewest people.
Is Cracco worth the cost?+
Cracco's tasting menu (€220) is technically excellent and architecturally remarkable. For a lighter Cracco experience, the ground-floor bistro and patisserie are €35–€60 per person.
