Lugano sits in Italian-speaking Switzerland, 40 minutes by car from the northern Lake Como shore. It is the easiest border crossing in the region and an underrated half-day.
Why go The lakefront promenade is the most polished on either Italian or Swiss lakes. Via Nassa, the main shopping street, carries serious watch and jewellery flagships (Patek, Rolex, Bulgari) often with stock that Milan boutiques don't. Lunch options are quietly excellent — Galleria Arté al Lago at Villa Castagnola is the standout.
The route From Como town: 30 minutes via Chiasso. From Bellagio: 90 minutes via Menaggio and Porlezza (the more scenic option through Lake Lugano's eastern shore).
The Monte Brè / Monte San Salvatore option Both peaks above Lugano have funiculars. Monte San Salvatore (912 m) gives the cleaner panorama over the city and lake. Allow 90 minutes for the round trip.
Combine with A morning in Bellagio, lunch in Lugano, [aperitivo back on Lake Como](/atlas/lake-como-sunset-aperitivo). Or pair with a [Como to St. Moritz day](/atlas/como-to-saint-moritz-day) on consecutive days.
