Milan to Lugano by chauffeur: the border crossing, explained

Lugano is 75 km from Milan — about 1h 10 from the city centre, 50 minutes from Como, 1h 30 from Malpensa.

The border Italy and Switzerland are both in Schengen, so there is no passport control in normal conditions — but Switzerland is outside the EU customs union, so the Swiss guard can and does stop vehicles for goods checks. Two practical consequences: 1. **Carry your passport or ID card**, even though nobody may ask for it. 2. **Declare high-value purchases.** If you bought a watch or jewellery in Milan and are crossing with it, keep the receipt accessible. Watch and jewellery declarations are the single most common reason a car is held at Brogeda.

Crossing times: Brogeda (the motorway crossing at Chiasso) is 5 minutes off-peak and up to 40 during Swiss commuter rush hours, 07:00–09:00 and 16:30–19:00. We route through Ponte Chiasso or Bizzarone when the motorway queue is live.

VAT refund on the way out If you are exporting goods purchased in Italy and want the VAT refund, the export stamp must be obtained at the crossing. It requires the goods, the invoice, and time. Tell the concierge before departure — we allocate 30 extra minutes and use a crossing with a staffed customs office.

Why not the train The Milano–Lugano train takes 1h 20 station to station, then you need a taxi at both ends. Door to door the car wins, carries your luggage, and does not care that you finished lunch in Cernobbio.
